For second grade:
Administer a Running Record/Informal Reading Inventory for a Narrative Text.
Complete a miscue analysis sheet.
Ask student to retell the passage and ask them literal and inferential comprehension questions.
Complete a retelling rubric and fluency rubric.
Analyze all of the information to determine the strengths and areas for new growth.
Administer a Running Record/Informal Reading Inventory for an Expository Text.
Complete a miscue analysis sheet.
Ask the student to restate the key concepts and ideas in the passage. Complete an expository text retelling rubric and fluency rubric.
Analyze all of the information to determine the strengths and areas for new growth.
Administer Sight Word assessment.
Administer Words Their Way Spelling Inventory.
If the student is still mastering early literacy concepts then administer the assessments that you find appropriate.
Determine and conduct any other assessment you think will give you more information about the student.
Gather all of your data and determine the student?s reading strengths.
Be sure to provide concrete evidence and think about how all of the multiple measures of assessment work together to give you a clear picture of the student as a reader.
You are trying to determine what language cueing systems (Meaning, Structure and Visual) the student relies on and which need to be enhanced. Be sure to determine the student?s independent and instructional reading level.
Then decide what next instructional steps would help scaffold the student. Be sure to think about what you have read about literacy, instruction, and strategy teaching.
In your final write-up, you will need to make instructional recommendations supported by the literature.
