Reading Response Assignment #1
1. Read Ch. 1 in Major issues in American Environmental History, by Carolyn Merchant, Cengage Publishers, 3rd edition, 9780495912422. These essays describe the various aspects/approaches of inquiry often taken in studying environmental history. These ideas will helps to inform our work in the course.
2. Read Ch. 2, including the documents and essays.
3. Complete the reading response paper. Guiding questions, along with practical instructions to follow in writing style, grammar, etc., will be included with this first assignment.
Reading Response assignment #1
Answer the following question in essay format, using information gleaned from the readings listed in the check list for this lesson. Be sure to use your best writing style, creating a solid thesis for your essay and paying attention to grammar, spelling, etc. Any time you use material that is not your original work, be sure to use an in-text citation listing the author’s last name and the page number where you found the information, such as: (Merchant, 52). Your finished essay should be 500 – 750 words in length, double-spaced. (This is approx. 2 – 3 pages, 10 – 12 pt font). Be sure to include a list of sources cited at the bottom of your essay. Here is your first essay question:
Discussing the Pueblo Indians, the Micmac Indians, and the Great Plains Indians, give a brief overview of each group’s way(s) of relating to the land, and discuss how this changed with the arrival of Europeans. This essay could include discussions of crops grown, animals hunted/utilized, as well as religious beliefs regarding the land and how this affected the manner in which they pursued their livelihoods. How did their encounters and continuous contact with Europeans change their relationship(s) with the land?
