Reflecting on Mixed Methods Research

Order Description
Consider how qualitative and quantitative research methods complement one another, and consider the role of mixed methods designs. Would it ever be viable to consider only quantitative or only qualitative methods for a research study? How can mixed methods vs. single (qual-quan) methods extend our understanding of a research problem? Why would it be important for a researcher to be conversant in both quantitative and qualitative methods? How do your thoughts on these questions relate to your worldview? What strategies might you use to help you become more comfortable with or develop further expertise in mixed methods research—as a consumer and/or producer of research?
Mixed Methods Research and Designs

Even though you understand that the choice of research methods stems most logically from the research question, you may feel that you are drawn more toward quantitative or qualitative methods. For some people, their worldview emphasizes the assumptions and evidence of one method or the other; these people then hold this emphasis as evidence of the validity of their approach. There are times, however, when a research question calls for another method or approach.

In many cases, a research question cannot be adequately addressed by one approach or the other. Sometimes, a complete story cannot be told without a combination of methods that seeks to integrate multiple approaches.

This week, you will reframe your research question so as to propose a mixed methods approach. You will also examine your worldview once again and how it may be reflected in this methodology.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

Identify and assess existing mixed methods studies in your topic

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of mixed methods in relationship to a topic (research question)

Identify and self-assess your current understanding of and comfort with mixed methods research designs
