Reflection and Discussion Forum Week 5

Chapter 9: Project Scheduling: Networks, Duration Estimation, and Critical Path

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the importance of project scheduling techniques.

2. Understand and apply key scheduling terminology.

3. Develop an activity network using Activity-on-Node (A O N) technique.

4. Perform activity duration estimation based on the use of probabilistic estimating techniques.

5. Construct the critical path for a project schedule network using forward and backward passes, determine project slack, and calculate the probability of finishing on time.

Chapter 10: Project Scheduling: Lagging, Crashing, and Activity Networks

Learning Objectives

1. Apply lag relationships to project activities.

2. Construct and comprehend Gantt charts.

3. Recognize alternative means to accelerate projects, including their benefits and drawbacks.

4. Develop activity networks using Activity-on-Arrow techniques.

5. Understand some of the important controversies in the use of project networks.

1. Reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Identify what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding.

2. Consider a project such as moving to a new neighborhood, completing a long-term school assignment, or even cleaning your bedroom. Develop a set of activities necessary to accomplish that project, and then order them in a precedence manner to create sequential logic. Explain and defend the number of steps you identified and the order in which you placed those steps for best completion of the project.

3. In crashing a project, we routinely focus on those activities that lie on the critical path, not activities with slack time. Explain why this is the case.

4. Identify and discuss some of the problems or dangers in using project networks. Under what circumstances can they be beneficial, and when can they be dangerous?
