Reflection on the Humanities

Reflection on the Humanities

A reflection paper is NOT a research paper. You should use your own ideas to reflect upon the materials from the learning unit. Use the information in the learning unit to do the following:

Think about the themes addressed in the study of Humanities as presented in this unit. Write an essay in which you argue for the value of one of these themes. You might address why the theme is valuable to you, to life, to education, history, or any other discipline. Be sure to highlight the arguments/discussion we learned about in this learning unit. Also, make sure to connect the theme to the Le Guin short story as an example you compare/contrast with your position.

The paper must be no fewer than three, and no more than four, double spaced pages. Your font must be 12pt; the margins 1 inch; the text left justified; and the heading needs to be double spaced and include your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the date. You need to have a title that is centered. The document must be saved and uploaded as a word document, rich text document, or pdf file.

The goal of this assignment is to work with the course materials and your own knowledge to create an understanding of the questions/prompt above. Using web or outside sources will result in a grade of 0.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Human Ways of Thinking
Humanities: The Big Picture
THE VALUE OF THE HUMANITIES
In Kate Cottle’s Ted Talk, she reflects on the Humanities classes she took in college. In the video, she will discuss practical reasons for studying the Humanities. Consider her ideas and think about how you might consider the content of this course. What tips might be helpful for working through this class? Have you heard any of these ideas before? It might be fun to watch the video now and then return to it at the end of the semester. How have her ideas come true? How might you better understand what she’s saying? In this course, we’ll frequently be making “contemporary connections.” What contemporary connections are being made in the video? What connections can you make?

THE HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF WRITING
Strictly speaking, this is NOT a writing class. Yes, you’ll be expected to write. However, some times it’s frustrating to fully appreciate the importance of writing. In this Ted Talk, Seth Lerer discusses writing, reading, the body, and technology. All of this has a direct impact on how we engage with the Humanities. As you watch the video, consider how the ideas he discusses change throughout time. What is your experience with writing? How does writing affect you or your understanding of Humanities? It might be fun to return to this video toward the end of the semester and reconsider the the points made in the video as they relate to the course. Moving forward, however, what is Lerer saying that might have an impact on our understanding of the Humanities and what we might expect from this course? What terms and ideas will be useful for understanding the Humanities? In this course, we’ll frequently be making “contemporary connections.” What contemporary connections are being made in the video? What connections can you make?
