SELF DIRECTED EXERCISES ON TIME USE
USING TIME BUDGET TO STUDY HUMAN OCCUPATION
PROCEDURE ? Write down your main activity (e.g. studying, cooking, childminding, watching TV) ? Write down who you did this activity for (e.g. self, a member of the same household, a member of another household, work, organisation/community) ? Write down anything else you did at the same time (e.g. eating or drinking, childminding, watching TV, listening to the radio, talking to a friend) ? Write down where you were (e.g. at University, home, shops, park, doctor, driving or riding in a car or bus etc.) ? Write down who else was at home, or with you away from home (e.g. your parents, your husband/wife/partner, a friend, a neighbour, other students)
TO ANALYSE THE TIME DIARY DATA Try to aggregate the amount of time you spent engaged in different categories of activity. For example the categories used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 1997 were:
1. Necessary time (e.g. personal care activities) 2. Contracted time (e.g. paid work activities, education activities) 3. Committed time (e.g. domestic activities, child care activities, purchasing activities, voluntary work and care activities) 4. Free time (e.g. recreation and leisure activities, social participation).
METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES TO THINK ABOUT. ? What difficulties did you have in categorising activities? ? What activities were most difficult to categorise? Why? ? Did you record your activities in as much detail as possible and regularly throughout the day? How would this affect the reliability of your findings? ? Did you change your activity habits because you were doing this exercise? What are the implications of this for your findings?
THE FINDINGS THEMSELVES. ? How did you spend your time? ? Were you surprised by your findings? Do the findings fit with your perception of yourself? ? Was there any pattern to your daily activities? ? Do these days differ from other days? In what way? ? How do these days fit into your weekly/monthly/annual pattern of activities? ? How do your findings differ from those of others in your group? Can you attempt to explain this?
? How do you think that your activities would differ from persons of another: e.g. age group, sex, cultural background, life stage (parent, full time paid employment, retiree)? ? Has this routine of activities any impact on your balance of activities in everyday life? ? How do any activities that you engaged in support your life roles? ? Were you aware of any biological considerations on you daily activities, eg morningness/eveningness? ? How did the activities engaged in on this day fit with your present life goals? Were they complimentary/discordant?
IMPLICATIONS ? What did you learn about your pattern of daily activities from this exercise? ? What, if any, are the potential uses of this exercise for clinical practice? ? Any other issues not covered in the above?
