Representation and importance of Women in Different Art periods

Student 1: Women have been represented in different ways throughout many art periods, presenting a woman in an artworkaffects and changes many aspects of a portrait, including its function, position of sitter, emphasis of costume, and the degree to which a sitter is idealized. Egyptian art being one of the major art periods which best represented women, and gave importance to women in their art works. The importance of women in Egyptian society is often conveyed in temple and tomb artwork as well. The chief role of the woman in Egypt was that of life-giver and supporter. Below is an examples of representation of women in Egyptian art. The image here shows Egyptian princess Nefertiabet (dated 2590-2565 BCE) from her tomb at Giza, painting on limestone. So the question which comes to mind is why such importance towards women?
Student2: Women were always portrayed in Egyptian art, basically because in ancient Egypt, women were supposedly seen as the equals of men in every aspect. But were they? Women were actually not equal to men when it came to occupations. Women were to stay home cooking, sowing, raising the children and managing the house, while men farmed or ran the government. Although women were seen in Egyptian art quite often, it was the ancient Greek artists that idealized the human figure. Both men and women were found in ancient art, but women were commonly portrayed as goddesses, such as Aphrodite and Athena. In the image below, you can see Parthenon, a temple on the Acropolis of Athens that was built between 447 and 432 BCE dedicated to Athena.
