Research assignment #1: select between options 1 and 2 below:
1. Author or Illustrator or Author/Illustrator Study – Write a 6-page research paper with in-text citations and a bibliography. Before beginning your paper, read 3 books by the same author/illustrator. Read reviews of all 3 books. For reviews, check the publisher’s websites or Amazon. Include 3 sources in addition to the children’s books.
Your paper will include:
Discussions of how artistry, theme and message are expressed through the author/illustrator’s words and/or images.
Reviews of each book. In your own words.
Types of children each book will appeal to.
Specific examples of ways that the books can be used in the classroom.
Brief quotations from published reviews (check the publisher’s website, Amazon or bn.com for each book. For the quotations, insert an in text citation in MLA style.
A biographical summary of the author/illustrator’s career, highlighting influences, training, popular books, and awards.
A bibliography of all sources.
2. Genre Study – Read 3 books in the same genre. Write a 6-page research paper with in text citations and a bibliography. Before beginning your paper, read 3 books in the same genre. Give a definition of your genre and discuss current trends in the genre. Do some research and cite sources. Read reviews of all 3 books. For reviews, check the publisher’s websites or Amazon. Include 3 sources in addition to the children’s books.

Sources: 3 adolescent/young adult books plus 3 other references

Evaluations of the three adolescent/young adult books With the same genre

An introduction framing the issue and its relevance to adolescents
A discussion of how to connect the issue to the curriculum
A history of the American Library Association’s Michael Prinz Award – Read three books that have won the Prinz Award or Honor.
In addition to the general requirements above, your paper must include:
The three books you select must all be Michael Prinz Award or Honor winners.
