Aim of paper

The aim of this paper is to allow the students an opportunity to complete their financial evaluation of a company using the financial research database Plunkett Research Online. Plunkett Research Online provides in-depth analysis of a company’s financials, comparisons to industry averages, a list of top executives, how the company compares to other competitors in terms of revenue, number of employees, market capitalization and other key financial metrics.

Review the Company Profile and answer the following questions in a PowerPoint Presentation:

What was the Gross Margin in 2014 and 2015?

What was the Earnings per Share in 2014 and 2015?

Contrst the 2015 Company Financials to the Industry Averages and export the results into a Microsoft® Excel® document.

Add a new column in your Microsoft® Excel® document titled “Change” and calculate the difference between the company’s 2015 financial results and the industry averages.

Explain in a 3 slide PowerPoint Presentation how the company you selected compares to the industry averages in terms of financial profitability, liquidity and solvency, and why the difference is important. Also review the financial statements over the last three years and discuss any positive and negative trends would you report to the company’s management. Be sure to include speaker notes with references.

Walmart, Inc., formerly Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is one of the world’s largest retailers, operating through a massive base of Walmart stores, Supercenters, Sam’s Clubs, Marketside, Neighborhood Markets and walmart.com. The company operates in three business segments: Walmart U.S., Walmart international and Sam’s Club. Walmart U.S. is a mass merchandiser of consumer products, groceries and drugs, operating under the Walmart brand, as well as walmart.com. This segment operates retail stores in the U.S., including all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, with Supercenters in 49 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico and Walmart discount stores in 41 states and Puerto Rico. Wal-Mart U.S. also operates a relatively small number Neighborhood Markets, which are about 40,000 square feet each. Its main line of business, the Walmart Supercenters, average 178,000 square feet each. Walmart International consists of operations in 27 countries outside the U.S., and includes numerous formats divided into three major categories: retail, wholesale and other. These categories consist of formats such as Supercenters, supermarkets, hypermarkets, warehouse clubs (including Sam’s Clubs), cash & carry, home improvement, specialty electronics, restaurants, apparel stores, drug stores and convenience stores. Sam’s Club operates membership-only warehouse clubs, as well as samsclub.com in the U.S. All memberships include a spouse/household card at no additional cost and Plus Members are eligible for cash rewards which provides $10 for every $500 in qualifying Sam’s Club purchases up to a $500 cash reward annually. In early 2018, Wal-Mart announced it would close 63 underperforming Sam’s stores across the U.S. In May 2018, Walmartm said it would sell Asda Group Ltd., its British arm, to J Sainsbury, making it the largest participant in the U.K.’s grocery market, in a deal that would net Walmart a 42% stake in J Sainsbury. In mid-2018, Walmart agreed to lead a group investing about $15 billion to acquire India’s leading ecommerce retailer, Flipkart.
