Research paper on International Relations

All papers must be submitted to VeriCite on Canvas. I will grade them electronically.
Please include the honor pledge at that top of the paper: “I have not given, received, or used any unauthorized assistance”.
See the course syllabus for information on plagiarism and academic integrity. Remember that violations of the university’s
Academic Integrity Policy, at a minimum, will result in a grading penalty in this course and an academic misconduct
report may be filed. Communicate with Dr. Kent if you are unclear on what constitutes plagiarism.
Description
Research and analyze a topic of your choice related to international development. In doing so, you might emphasize a
theoretical framework, a topic related to development efforts, or a combination of both. Be sure to situate the topic within the
larger framework of development. You should incorporate relevant information and perspectives highlighted in the course.
Also be sure to adequately narrow and focus the topic so that you are able to provide ample depth.
Finalizing Topic and Seeking Guidance
Please run your topic by me before you get too far into it. Email the topic to me, check in with me during a class break or
my office hours, or provide a hard copy proposal. Also feel free to check in with me AGAIN, especially if you have any
concerns, run into problems, or change topics.
Formatting
The paper should be 10 to 12 pages in length and double-spaced.
– Given the length of the paper, consider using section headings
– Titles are helpful
– Be sure to indent and single space quotes over 4 lines long
Citing Works
YOU MUST INCORPORATE SCHOLARLY OR ACADEMIC SOURCES. You MUST cite all sources (articles, web
sites, books, documentaries, lecture notes, etc.) both in the text and on a references cited page. As this is a social science
course, the ideal style formats for this type of paper are Chicago or APA. Be sure to cite sources rather than titles.
Grading Criteria
Critical analysis or argument (~25%)
The paper moves beyond a superficial description to critically analyze the topic, and perhaps build an argument or take a firm
stand on an issue. It is evident that the author has wrestled with the issues and concerns; the discussion therefore reveals depth
of understanding and awareness of complexities. The issues are examined from multiple vantage points and using various
lenses.
Research (~25%)
The paper draws on evidence from an adequate number of sources (from outside of class). It is clear that research was
conducted in a thoughtful and deliberate way and the paper incorporates appropriate information from appropriate sources given
the topic. It is evident that the student read and understood the cited materials.
Incorporation of course topics and materials (~20%)
When relevant, the paper points to or incorporates concerns, topics, evidence, etcetera from the course (lectures, readings, films,
discussions). More generally, the author demonstrates engagement with the complexities of development over the course of the
semester.
Citing of sources (~10%)
It is clear throughout the paper where ideas, data, and information came from.
Organization and clarity of writing (~10%)
The paper is organized and presented in a way that makes the analysis or argument clear.
Presentation (~10%)
The paper has been edited for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation, and so on such that the final product is
polished and professional.
