Nursing theories are classified according to their scope, generalization and abstraction. Two type of theories will be discussed here: grand and middle theories. Grand theories are the most complex and broad in scope. They are nonspecific and focus on abstract concept. they are not directly testable and can be applied to all kinds of setting and population. In contrast, middle range theories are specific and can be tested. They are highly specific to nursing and are easier to comprehend. They describe the outcomes that are relevant to patients and define the action of the nurses. An example of a middle range theory is the theory of technology competency as caring developed by Rozzano Locsin. Even though this theory is fairly young, it is relevant to the present time and has contributed to the understanding of nursing and nursing care in light of technological advancement. According to Locsin (2013), it is crucial for nurses to understand that competency in technology is an expression of caring. An example of grand theory is the theory of self-care deficit developed by Dorothea Orem. One major contribution Orem provided to nursing is the formulation of a framework for patient to be self-reliant. Per Hasanpour-Dehkordi (2016), Orem theory has been applied to patient with certain chronic disease.
