Conclusion:-

Indeed, culture is a complex and dynamic phenomena that most understand as something that describes a certain ethnic group (Mitchel et al, 2010). However, culture is much more as it greatly influences a person’s behaviors, practices, norms, customs, and beliefs on illness, health, and health care. Given that the United States is often referred to as a melting pot, cultural diversity is an inevitable reality in today’s society. Not only are we faced with an increasingly diverse patient population, are also a diverse group of health care providers. Challenges emerge from a lack of knowledge, direction, and guidance when nurses come across cultural barriers or patients from unfamiliar backgrounds when providing care. With the upcoming health care reform, health care organizations are anticipating a large percent of the 50 million uninsured Americans to receive health care coverage (Department of Health and Human Services, 2011). This is a massive number of people from different cultures and walks of life who will be seeking care in our facilities.

It is crucial for health care systems to have a strategic plan in place to address and implement cultural competence programs to improve care and minimize disparities. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of these programs are necessary to ensure success.

Understandably, the approach one takes on providing care is influenced by one’s own cultural lens, what one sees, feels, and believes is based on their own perspective (Brady, 2010). For this reason, it is imperative that leaders and health care organizations provide the tools and education so that health care professionals are cognizant of their beliefs and factors that shape them culturally. Awareness of oneself further promotes the ability to be sensitive to the needs of others. Implementing such strategies to increase cultural sensitivity and competency entails a collaborative approach between everyone in a health care system. The impact of cultural competence and sensitivity is far-reaching in promoting optimal patient outcomes. It is increasingly important for all health care professionals to understand the culture and beliefs of the patient population they serve, in order to integrate these beliefs in his or her practice and enhance the quality of care provided to all patients.
