Scary Story

In the spirit of Stephen King, your next assignment is to write a short story that falls somewhere within the horror and suspense genres. Your story can feature ghosts, monsters, and other things that go bump in the night—or it can possess no supernatural aspects at all. You may wish to draw upon past writing assignments and journal exercises for inspiration. Here are some possible starting points for fictionalization:

  • A spooky, strange, or disturbing experience that actually happened—to you, a friend, or a family member.
  • An urban legend or ghost story you heard growing up (or even recently)
  • A recurring nightmare
  • Your worst fear

FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Your story must be double-spaced and typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with normal margins (1 inch).
  • Each short story should be a minimum of five pages.
  • There is no maximum page requirement, but please keep in mind that we will be reading multiple stories per class.
  • Because your peers will need time to read all the assigned stories, late work will not be accepted without a viable reason.
  • Please treat your classmates’ work in a confidential manner. To be clear, no one outside of ENGL 323 is allowed to read these stories—not your friends, not your roommates, not even family.
