Semiotics is one of the most imporant developments in contemporary thought. It developed out of philosophy, linguistics and communication study in the early twentieth century as a tool to study how signs and symbols work. Ferdinand Saussure, the Swiss linguist who founded the related discipline of semiology defined it as the study of ‘the life of signs in society’. Semiotics have subsequently informed the study of art and photography and has also inspired new approaches to its making. The lecture will also look at the way that the concept of ideology became of considerable importance from the 1960s onwards.ÂÂ
