More often than not, the media tends to glorify serial killers; thus contributing to the public’s fascination with the phenomenon of serial murder. However, amidst all this, the victims receive little attention, and their names are soon forgotten. You are required to submit a poster highlighting the importance of victims. This task will allow you to demonstrate your ability to provide a clear and concise exposition of an important issue – the invisibility of victims.
Thinking beyond the Academy: In all professional jobs, you would be expected to communicate your ideas effectively and clearly. Posters can be a remarkably effective way of getting your message out to the public / your target audience. Designing and producing a poster will allow you to practice your (written and visual) communication skills.
A good poster will:
• Include a relevant case study / studies
• Include an attractive layout
o Eye-catching that makes the public want to stop and look at it (visual images, choice of colour schemes etc.)
• Include a simple layout
o Remember: anything that appears too convoluted will make the audience lose interest. You can use bullet-points and/or some other format, i.e. boxed text (to highlight key points).
• Include organisation
o Make your points easy to read and follow
• Be readable
o Think carefully about the choice of font and how much information you intend to share (word count is between 300 and 1000 words). The presentation of the poster also needs to be neat and show accuracy.
• Be educational
o Explain your point clearly and concisely to the audience thus highlighting the importance of the issue.
o It is essential that somewhere in your posteryou include the phrase ‘Most people remember the names of infamous serial killers. But all too often people forget about the victims!’
o You are also expected to include the word invisible or invisibility in the poster too.
