This week you will be participating in a debate focused on social marketing from a health education perspective. Within this debate you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of strategic planning, the use of technology, promotion, and health communication. In the debate link on the left side you will see two videos. Both videos are geared at addressing a health issue and depending upon your group you will either be highlighting the positives of the videos or the negatives. As a reference, below is the most successful health campaign to date which began in Thailand and has not been utilized throughout the world.

Notice any differences? Hopefully you can see that when a message is powerful and provokes a positive change the rest of the world can benefit. In this case, the U.S. version fell short in that it did not provide educational materials to those that the child approached. The Thai version (original) was created by their public health office and had a plan in place for when the ad started to run, where the U.S. video has been created by multiple individuals and organizations but lacking in education and preparedness for action.

As health educators striving towards multicultural competency, we are faced with daily examples of potential ethical dilemmas when dealing with members of different cultural backgrounds.
