9.1 National Strategy on Dementia

Write 200–450 words describing the social issue of dementia. Using the experiences from the UK and the Netherlands, and the Canadian Medical Association framework for a Canadian dementia strategy, consider the key elements to be considered in a national strategy on dementia. Remember some of the key elements in the National Framework for Aging. As a social worker, how would you advocate for national policy on dementia. What would be some of the key principles that you would want included in the strategy?

10.1 Truth and Reconciliation – A Path forward

Write 200–450 words on your perspectives on the Truth and Reconciliation processes. Why is this process necessary? How can this process create new understandings for yourself (either as an Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal person)? How does understanding the children’s experience of attending residential school have an impact on the over-representation of Aboriginal children in the child welfare system today?

10.2 Social Policy in Action – A Review of a Child and Youth Representative report

Write 200–450 words on your perspectives of some of the structural oppressions and the social policy consequences that occurred for one of the children identified in the Representative of Child and Youth reports.

Using a First Nations holistic policy and planning process (Exhibit 12.7 – Chappell), identify one or two recommendations you would want to make to provide for a more effective Aboriginal child welfare system.

11.1 Canada’s Changing Immigration Policy and Discrimination

Write 200–450 words summarizing the changes made to the Canadian immigration system over the last 20 years. Consider how some of the practices and policies are discriminatory and how systematic racism occurs through the policies. You may need to consider also the income security policies in Canada.

12.1 Linkage between Policy and Experience for people with disabilities

Write 200–450 words describing one of the Articles in the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. Consider this right and how it is operationalized in schools, universities, or workplaces. From your experience (personal or elicited through observing or participating in conversations with people with disabilities), how well is society ensuring that people with disabilities can actualize the right you are considering?

If improvements are necessary, how could they occur?
