The special occasion speech is a 2 ½ 3 ½ -minute speech which may be given to (1) introduce, (2) toast, (3) present an award, (4) nominate, (5) accept, (6) give a keynote address, (7) celebrate commencement, (8) commemorate or give tribute, (9) eulogize, or (10) give an after dinner speech. For our purposes, you will choose one of these ten. In writing this speech, you should use language creatively and imaginatively in order to express honest emotions.

Special occasion speeches are not biographies; they inspire, commemorate or pay tribute in order to:

give the audience hope for the future.
uplift the audience member’s feelings and emotions.
heighten their admiration for the person, group, institution, event or idea being praised.
express feelings, arouse sentiments.
Consider the following tips when preparing your special occasion speech:

1. Start with a significant aspect of your subject to commemorate.

2. Explain why you want to pay a tribute.

3. Refer to the particular contributions, achievements or merits.

4. Link your examples to the morality, taste, beliefs, opinions and sentiments of your audience.

5. Describe the values in such a way that your audience can empathize and re-experience these feelings.

6. Conclude with a memorable summary of the topics mentioned in the speech.

7. Help the audience members to remember your main message. Especially emphasize the values that are being celebrated.

Tips for Language and the style of the presentation

Avoid clichés and trite sentiments.
Utilize stylistic devices like–imagery, rhythm, metaphor, simile, antithesis.
Use expressive and elegant language.
Avoid exaggerating expressions.
