What is the specific topic that this article addresses/ English

Purpose:  This essay has two goals:

  • To practice close reading and analysis of a contemporary article dealing with an issue of current importance
  • To hone skills drawing connections between contemporary concerns and historical issues

Choose one of the recommended articles below. In a four page (~1200 word) essay, answer the following questions:

  • What is the specific topic that this article addresses? What broader course themes (justice, equality, good government, etc.) does it bring to mind?
  • How does the author address the topic? Does she/he make an argument? What evidence does the author use to support the article’s claims? What is his/her writing style?
  • How does the article relate to at least two texts (Plato, Republic, Galileo, Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina, Marx and Engels, The Communist Manifesto, Milton and Rose Friedman, “Capitalism and Freedom, Wollstonecraft, A Vindication) we have read thus far? Does the article’s author make arguments similar to or different from other readings? How do the books we have read shape your response to this article?

Tips:

  • The questions above are meant to guide you in preparing for this essay, but the essay should do more than just answer them.
  • Begin the essay with a strong introduction that makes clear the relationship between your article and the course texts
