Storytelling

In your textbook, beginning on page 118, read “White Buffalo Calf Woman Brings the First Pipe.” ln an

essay of about three pages, compare or contrast White Buffalo Woman to one other main character in a

story. Some of your choices are:

Pele, in “Pele’s Revenge,” page 79

the wife in “”How Selfishness was Rewarded,” page 45

St. Theresa in “St. Theresa and the Lord,” page 99

the midwife in “The Midwife of Dakar,” page 134

If you chose a main female character from another story that does not appear in the textbook or in
BlackBoard, you must provide me with a copy of the story.

Since this will be an essay about characters, you can be guided by your character worksheets,
emphasizing:

1. how the character is motivated in various circumstances

2. what that character might represent to the listener

W. You’re using the imagination Rafe Martin says you need in order to be an
Efiea’ve storyteller. (“Between Teller and Listener: The Reciprocity of Storytelling,” Blackboard page 42″
4:9) I” mOSt C3565, the story will not tell you what the character is like, so you must create your own
pICture of that character in order to bring the story alive.
