The five strategies for effective conflict management according to Lewicki, Saunders & Barry (2011) are:

1. Contending: More of a one sided approach with threats, punishment intimidation to try to get the other party to fold and give in to their demands.

2. Yielding: Is when the one side of the party show little concern of their outcomes of the negotiation but it interested in the other side’s outcomes.

3. Inaction: Avoiding confrontation with little concern and is passive, silent or withdrawal from the negotiations.

4. Problem Solving: Two parties during the negotiation are concerned with each other’s outcomes. These parties want to pursue a joint agreement for both sides to have a good outcome.

5. Compromising: A strategic approach to conflicts where one side is strongly concerned with their out outcomes while being moderately interested in the other sides.
