Much of Africa has been under colonial rule by a European power within the last 150 years. Both Cote d’Ivoire and Gabon were under French colonial rule. What kind of governing organization did France leave behind when these two countries became independent of French rule? Under colonialism, colonies traditionally served as providers of raw materials — both natural resources and agricultural resources. Is this still true for these two countries? What unique challenges do they face as providers of only 1 or 2 major raw materials? Does having a more diversified economy usually mean a country is stronger, or weaker?
