Summary-Astronomy paper

Summary-Astronomy paper

Just answer the questions below nothing else needs to be added and needs two summaries no specific word count.

The journal will consist of summaries of science articles that cover the disciplines studied during the semester. There will be two summaries per discipline: Astronomy.

The best sources are science magazines such as Discover, National Geographic or Scientific American. News magazines such as Time, Newsweek and US News and World Report also have the occasional science article. Each summary needs a complete reference, with the Name, date, page numbers and author (some of the News magazines do not list the author). Each of the above magazines also has web sites. If you use an article from the web you need to write the complete web address as the reference. Do not include a copy or printout of the article.

You can also find articles for each subject at the SPC online library. I suggest using Academic Search Premier. You will need to use search terms more specific than the general sections. For example, you might search for all glacier articles. You may use any source in the database except for newspaper “briefs”. A brief is a very short announcement of something related to science. For example, hourly updates of hurricanes are briefs and will not be accepted as an article summary.

2. Answer the following questions for each summary.

a. Who is the audience for the article?

b. What can you find out about the author’s credentials (this may have to be googled, some magazines, eg. Time, do not list individual authors)?

c. What is the main idea (purpose) of the article?

d. What is the supporting evidence that the author uses to develop the main idea

(usually two or more ideas are presented as evidence – so you need to find at

least two)?

e. What supporting evidence do you find most convincing? Why?

f. What supporting evidence do you find least convincing? Why?

g. What is the author’s conclusion(s)? Is this conclusion clearly supported by the

evidence presented? Why or why not?

h. Can you think of any evidence that the author could have used that would have

supported his idea?

3. Use the following citation format:

Authors name (Last name, First name), date of publication, Title of article, Magazine or Journal Title, volume and page number.

Do not use newspaper articles or encyclopedia articles.
