Teaching Aerodynamics

Introduction

As noted at the beginning of this section, one of the best ways you can learn about a topic is by preparing to teach someone else. Basic aerodynamic principles are something with which you are already very familiar. To learn the intricacies and nuances associated with aerodynamics and the four forces of flight, you will prepare a teaching presentation on this topic.

Instruction

Using the notes you have prepared throughout this section, prepare a lesson to teach students about basic aerodynamic theory and principles. You should prepare a lesson plan/outline, outlining what you will teach and a slideshow presentation with accompanying notes that you will use in your presentation. Your lesson should cover at least the following topics:

  • Newton’s Laws as they relate to aerodynamics (5 Points)
  • Bernoulli’s principle and Venturi tubes (5 Points)
  • The relationship between the four forces of flight (10 Points)
  • How lift is created, measured, and calculated (10 Points)
  • Stall creation and progression across the airfoil and wing planform (10 Points)
  • Coefficients of lift and drag (10 Points)
  • Parasite, induced, and total drag (10 Points)
  • Laminar and boundary layers (10 Points)
  • Ground effect (10 Points)
  • Sources of thrust, with their advantages and disadvantages (10 Points)
  • How each source of thrust works (10 Points)

After creating the lesson plan/outline and accompanying presentation with notes, run through it to make sure it covers everything above. Then submit it according to the guidelines below.

Grading

Your presentation will be graded according to the points listed with each topic above. If you present the topic thoroughly and accurately in a way that demonstrates your understanding, you will receive full credit. Incomplete lesson plans/outlines and presentations without notes will receive point deductions.

Submission

You should submit your lesson plan/outline and presentation as separate documents to the course using the link in the upper right.
