Reflective Journal Report: guide and expectations
Description
Students are required to write a report based on an assigned published article.

Format
Computer generated ward document, front size: 12; double spacing
Length: A 2,000 ? 2,500 wards document (not including references, tables and figures)
References: maximum 20 references, consistent format using NCBI style (alternatively BMJ style or Vancouver style or other formal referencing styles are acceptable).

Content
It is expected the assignment will include the following components (A, B, D and E):

A. Introduction
This section is described as a comprehensive summary/ review of topics that are relevant to the assigned article. The content of this section shall include background information that is required for understand and effectively evaluate the content of the assigned article, as well as discussion in the relevant topic. The introduction section shall also include a description and evaluation of current practice and/ or guideline for condition(s) discussed in the article.
For example: article 1 describes a study that investigates the use of Drug A in the treatment of Disease X. The introduction may therefore include a description of the pathogenesis of Disease X, important/ progression/ complication of Disease X, the pharmacology and role of Drug A in relation to Disease X, and the important of managing Disease X with certain group(s) of medication (similar or different from Drug A).
It is recommended that the introduction section to include comprehensive description of the subject/ topic relevant in the article. Students are also expected to describe, explain and justify (if applicable) the practice standard/ guideline in their own ward, and not simply copy the guideline or protocol from standard resources (e.g. therapeutic guideline, AMH, etc.)

B. Summary of the article
This section is the independent summary of the assigned article. The summary shall describe all component of the study, including the intension, design, conduct, data, finding and result. The summary shall be true to the original content of the article (but not to be influenced by the original author?s conclusion) without significant bias or judgement.
Students are expected to produce a comprehensive summary of the published article in their own understanding and in their own wards. Students are encouraged to describe the article from their own prospective with appropriate explanation and justification (if applicable), which may or may not have differences from the original article.

C. Critical evaluation of the article
This component is not essential for PHA312 unit, but will be desire to be included in the report.
The evaluation shall including both the strength and weakness of the study. Any point of argument (support or criticism) shall be properly supported by reliable data, references, explanation and justification (if applicable).

At the occasion when criticism includes weakness and limitation in the conduct of the study, it shall always include appropriate solution or alternative method(s) to those employed in the study. (E.g. if the criticism involve a small sample size, student will need to provide suggestion of an alternative sample size with appropriate justification). When critical evaluation includes the data and finding of the study, supporting data from appropriate source(s) should always be included.

D. Summary and discussion
This component is the overall discussion and summary after reading the assigned article. The discussion shall include the value to the study and its impact towards understanding or management of particular disease/ condition (as described in section A). The discussion may also include idea of utilising the data/ finding/ methodology/ procedure of the study for future management or research. This component shall also include a summary for the overall review, which contains all the important concepts discussed within the document.
Students are expected to provide individual view from a wide range of prospective relevant to the objective of the assigned article/ study, as well as demonstrate high level of understanding of particular topic (e.g. understanding Disease X and the ability/inability of modern medicine in treating/cure the disease)

E. References
The reference will include both in-line-referencing method and a list of bibliography at the end of the document. The bibliography shall include the complete list of references used for this assignment. Synthesis of information from reliable source, as well as accurate and truthful referencing is considering the most important component of the review.
Students are expected to produce accurate in-line-referencing and an accurate list of bibliography with standard referencing method. Any statement made in the document shall be properly referenced (in-line referencing), with the exception that the statement is derived from the student?s own opinion. The reference is expected to be comprehensive and consistent.
