The Greedy Mind
In Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace” a young beautiful and poor woman, Mathilde, who borrowed a necklace from her rich friend Madame Frostier for a ball party. After losing the necklace she and her husband, not knowing the necklace was fake, bought a similar one to return it. But it was a great pride for Mathilda to confess the truth to her friend after ten years for her greed.
This story actually tells us about the how the greed and pride lead to life changing. The greed that Mathilde had for wealth and bring rich was gone when she lost the necklace. She borrowed the necklace for the ball party to show people that she is not poor, and that greed led her to poverty and debts. It took Mathilde and her husband 10 years to pay it off.
The author wrote this story to give them a message about life. The message would be to be happy with what they have because greediness can lead them to the worst. And confessing something could be a great pride and may be not make the situation worst. Greedy makes people worst than they are so the author pointed out greediness so that the readers can know the consequences for being greedy.
This story was helpful to us because Mathilde lost what she had. She lost the her beauty after the debt and living penury life. And when she meets Madame Forestier and confesses the truth and finds out the necklace was fake. So, all these years she has been working to pay back those debts led her to lose what she already had. I think this was a life lesson to her not to be greedy and be happy with what she have.
Confessing to her friend lifted a huge burden from Mathilde. Greediness made her borrow the necklace to look wealthy and rich. Therefore, losing the necklace and buying another one to replace it made her lose all she had.
