Theater Experience Paper

Write an analysis and evaluation of your chosen play. Make sure your analysis includes the structural elements covered in the assignment for Chapter 3. Papers must be a minimum of four typewritten pages (double spaced, 12 point courier, or comparable, font). This does not include the list of works cited. Of course, you may write more than four pages if necessary. Do not summarize, review, retell or fill any space whatever with an account of the plot of your chosen play. I have read all these plays. I will be able to follow your analysis and comments without the assistance of a plot summary.

Well written papers will include:

ï‚™ Background research on the author. For example, was there anything from the playwright’s personal life that influenced the writing of this play? Did the author borrow his ideas from any other sources? How does this play compare to other works by this playwright? (15 points)

ï‚™ Background research on the play. For example, when was the play written? Did any other events at that time influence the style or production of this play? How was the play received by the original audience? Has this play influenced plays by other authors, which followed it? (15 points)

ï‚™ Analysis of the structure of the play. Who is the protagonist? Who/what is the antagonistic force? What is the nature of the root conflict and how is it resolved? What are the themes, or concepts, that are the focus of this play? How are these themes similar to, or different from, other plays of this era? (50 points)

ï‚™ Evaluation of the play. By its nature, art is open many differing opinions. However, all of these plays have been deemed “great works” by a variety of critics over the years. Provide examples from critics’ works showing what makes your chosen play great. Show how the play influenced other plays written in later years. Is there anything about this play that compares to works in other forms of art? (20 points)
