Thesis statement paper

Thesis statement paper

4 page minimum

typed, double-spaced, 12 point type (Times New Roman),

The essay should have an introduction and thesis statement, body paragraphs proving the thesis, and a conclusion. As with the other primary source assignments we have had in this class, this assignment requires reading between the lines and thoughtful, creative analysis.

*** Be sure to use specific examples and direct quotes from the texts to support your arguments! ***

We have talked a great deal about gender codes and ideology in this class, but we have also talked about how class background can influence the experience of gender expectations. Carles and Beauvoir were both working as teachers during the time, and both were in relationships with long-time partners – Jean Carles and Jean-Paul Sartre respectively. But Carles and Beauvoir both came from very different family backgrounds and grew up in very different regions of France.

Paper Prompt: For this final paper, compare Emilie Carles’ and Simone de Beauvoir’s experiences during the invasion and occupation of France in 1940-1945. Read Carles’ memoirs, A Life of Her Own, specifically Chapters 25-28 on the 1930s and 1940s (pages: 175-219). Compare them with the two texts about 1940 by Simone de Beauvoir, The Prime of Life and Letters to Sartre, that we read for class.

How did their experiences compare in 1940 -1945, during the Nazi invasion and occupation of France? Did they have similar experiences based on gender? Did their class background or other aspects of their ‘subject position’ influence their experiences, or give them different experiences altogether?

Some of the ways you can think about this question are:

— what was their role in the political events of the time?

— how did they participate in resistance or collaboration?

— did patriarchy play a role in their personal lives or their interaction with political events?

You may only use the texts assigned on the course syllabus. Resist the urge to cut and paste, either literally or figuratively by using other people’s ideas. If I find that you have used other people’s ideas (including Wikipedia, Amazon reviews, book jacket descriptions, etc.), I will not accept the assignment because I will not be able to consider it your own work.

Tips for writing a strong paper:

— Be sure to set up a strong thesis statement (argument) for your paper in your opening paragraph. A thesis is an answer to a question, it is specific, and it is always a debatable point.

— Be sure that the topic sentence of each paragraph matches the evidence that you present in the paragraph; if topic sentence and evidence don’t match, then you should rewrite the topic sentence or edit and possibly remove or move elsewhere any evidence that doesn’t fit.

— Be sure to use specific examples and evidence to support your thesis; the more creative and precise you can be in your use of evidence, the more persuasive and interesting your paper will be.

— Use page numbers for every quote, either in parentheses or as an endnote.

— Be sure to proof-read this paper carefully. For this assignment, spelling and grammar count in the grade.
