Assignment 2 Systematic review: Nutrition and adolescent bone health
Purpose of the assignment
You are a private nutrition consultant commissioned by the federal government to conduct a systematic literature review on how dietary factors affect adolescent bone development.
Unit Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge of topical nutritional issues within the infant, child and adolescent population
Critically evaluate the aetiology and prevention or treatment of child and adolescent nutritional problems
Determine and disseminate the factors that influence food behaviour in infants, children and adolescents when experiencing nutritional issues

Before you start your assignment review a few published systematic reviews in the area of nutrition to see how they are structured.
Introduction (20%)
Provide a rationale for conducting the systematic review. Discuss the importance of one nutrient in relation to adolescent bone health. State the aim of the systematic review.
Methods (20%)
Discuss the search strategy used in this review. State the search terms used and database (one) searched. Your search will focus on one nutrient and one study design (eg. randomised controlled trial, cross sectional)
Results (20%)
From your search of the literature, summarise your findings of five studies in a table (not included in the word count). This table should include key findings from the studies eg author (year), participants, intervention, duration of study, outcome. The headings used in your table will be dependent on your study design eg randomised controlled trial, cohort study design. Look at other published systematic reviews with your chosen study design to see what headings you should include.
In the text provide an overview of the studies eg provide a range of the sample size and study duration. Do not repeat the information for each individual study that is presented in the table. Explain to the reader the overall key findings. ie from these five studies are they all having a beneficial effect on bone development? Include a critical analysis of these studies in the text.
Discussion (20%)
In the first paragraph state the aim of your systematic review and your key findings. Discuss the significance of the findings from your systematic review and recommendations in the context of adolescent bone health. Discuss any future research.
