WRITING ACTIVITY 1 (20 points) ? WRIT 110
The following assignment should be typed and printed, double-spaced, 1 to 2 pages, using 12-point Calibri or Times New Roman font. (Future assignments will be submitted as .doc/.docx attachments through Moodle.) The activity will be due at the start of class MONDAY, 9/5.
Directions: Deliver an essay that develops a THESIS on the subject of WRITING. What you say about writing is up to you, but for full credit you need to avoid a general statement (Ex. ?Writing is important?) and find a perspective that is focused and engaging (Ex. ?Building your writing skills can help you become a stronger musician.?) Make sure you create a brief introduction paragraph ? not just your thesis sentence ? that introduces subject and perspective to the reader.
From there, you will develop your thesis/thematic idea. EXAMPLES are required in three separate sections of the essay; you may choose to use a patterned series and/or brief examples to illustrate your thesis.
(By ?separate sections,? I mean that you need more than to just list three examples in a row. Examples should be used to support three different points within the essay. Using the focused thesis above, you might choose a patterned series to illustrate the point that many creative musical and visual artists were also writers: Durrenmatt was a playwright and painter, Mussorgsky was a novelist and musician, DaVinci was an inventor and a philosopher writer. Then you need two more example moments within the essay; these will inform new points you are making related to the thesis.)
To succeed:
? craft a THESIS that says something intriguing instead of something obvious; make it focused
? develop your thesis through EXAMPLES; remember that three separate instances are required throughout the essay
? provide an INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH that includes a one-sentence thesis statement
? create a TITLE for the essay that hints at subject and perspective; do not call it Writing Activity 1 or Writing Essay ?(Example: The Connection Between Writing and Art)
? Include your name and WA1 in the upper right corner of the first page
