What would be your understanding of the role of a Classification Society in
the new building of a vessel? Please detail all the work that the Class will
be involved in during this process right from the inception of the project to
delivery of the vessel to the owner by the shipyard.
2. (25%) What are the IMO regulations for SOx emissions in Sulphur Emission
Control Areas? A vessel under you will be going into Sulphur ECA for the first
time. Write a circular to the ship about the fuel changeover procedure for the
main engine from high sulphur heavy oil to low sulphur gas oil while entering
into such areas. What kind of cylinder oil would you recommend for a main
engine burning low sulphur fuel (gas oil) and why?
3. (25%) As a Superintendent you have been asked to take over a ship which is
laid up for the past one year and get it ready for sailing. How will you
reactivate the “dead” ship and get it ready for sailing? You may answer this
point wise from the time that you step on the vessel with your key officers
and crew.
4. (25%) One of the vessels under your supervision is due for its special
survey next year. The process will involve dry docking, survey of machinery,
repairs to hull and machinery and maintenance of items that could only receive
attention in the dry dock. What will be your consideration in choosing a dry
dock for this vessel? Outline a typical list of items for such a dry docking
and how will you distribute the work between the shipyard, crew and coordinate
the attendance of the Class surveyor.
