I believe that Dr. Kendi makes a convincing argument claiming that racist ideas impacted policies. These ideas shaped all of early policies. For example, as stated in
the video, the Dutch allowed blacks to live freely but as soon as the English began to own and control parts of New York they began to gradually take away the right of
Blacks making it illegal to assemble and also to own land. This policy was very strategic in taking away the vast amount of land that was owned by free Blacks during
this time period. Similarly, blacks were initially barred from serving in the Union war effort simply because White soldiers refused to fight alongside them. It was
“stamped from the beginning” this idea of inferiority based on the color of one’s skin. And with these racist ideas, this country created its law system ensuring that
these racist ideals were upheld with the policies such as the 3/5ths rule and segregational apartheid. This greatly affected black politics because with oppressive
systems constantly claiming that blacks are inferior, there was a great disparity in the political representation of Blacks. Even informal political groups and their
leaders such as Catto and Marcus Garvey were eventually murdered and deported to silence and stifle the growth of urban black politics.

After analyzing the lecture, videos and readings I completely agree with Dr. Kendi regarding his argument on the deep impact of old racist ideas on policies. This
country was founded on hostile racist ideologies dating back to the 1600-1800’s when people from Caucasian decent came and slaughtered the indigenous people. From
there the enslavement of African people to work the land was birthed. The lecture made note that slavery would not have been justified without the implementation of
racist ideas. Furthermore, during the establishment of Philadelphia many free blacks traveled up north and faced terrifying conditions and endured brutal
circumstances. One video explained that “Philadelphia was not a nice place for a black person to live” in addition 1 out of 10 people owned slaves and those who did
not were not exclusive to the community and was looked down upon. One quote in particular that stood out to me reads “born into a free society but not to be free is to
be born into a lie”. Fast forward to present day African Americans are still being subjected to the racist culture of this country, instead of being in servitude we
are now heavily incarcerated. Touching base on the reading, black people are five times more likely to be incarcerated than whites, only a non educated and or racist
individual can read this statistic and not see this as distinguishing and an issue that needs addressing in our society. There are racial disparities in every aspect
of the United States and the texts argues that such disparities have existed and persisted. Racist ideas is the basis of this language and life to some people it is
their “common sense” Racist policies are a direct connection to racial disparities. Dr. Kendi says “hate and ignorance have not driven the history of racist ideas in
America. Racist policies have driven the history of racist ideas”. Moving on, this relates to Urban Black Politics because without racist ideas on policies there would
be no need for Urban Black Politics. Urban Black Politics exist because racism exists there is a need for a distinguished representative in politics to articulate the
racial disparities in my community.
