Counting Techniques and Introduction to Probability

ALL questions below must be answered. Show ALL step-by-step calculation. Upload this modified Answer Form to the intellipath Unit 5 Submission lesson. Make sure you submit your work in a modified MS Word document; handwritten work will not be accepted. If you need assistance, please contact your course instructor.

Graphs and charts allow consumers of information to read, interpret, and analyze data quickly through visual representations. In this assignment you will interpret, analyze, and create different types of graphs to accurately represent data.

1. Describe the purposes of three different types of data visualizations (graphs and charts). Provide an example of a realistic data set that would be displayed well with this type of graph or chart. (Do not include the graphs or charts).

2. A family of four (two parents and two children) is trying to be more conscious of their water usage. In order to find opportunities where they might make the most impact, they researched the average household water consumption for various uses. They already have a new house with EnergyStar appliances, which will decrease water usage for the dishwasher and clothes washer. Help them determine where they can make the most impact with their water usage.

a. Complete the chart below for each family member based on information below the table and your own logical estimations. Calculate the Daily Total and Weekly Totals. When the table is complete, copy/paste it into MS Excel. For ease of creating graphs and charts, you can delete the second column labeled US average consumption of Water. (10 points)

Bath/Showers: One parent takes a shower every morning and one shower after working out at night. The other parent takes one shower per day and both of the children take a bath every night. Estimate how many minutes each family member showers, calculate their gallon usage, and fill in the chart appropriately.

Teeth Brushing: Each family member brushes their teeth twice a day. Calculate how many gallons each family member uses and fill in the chart appropriately.

Handwashing: One parent is a nurse and pushes everyone to wash hands several times a day. Decide how often and for how many minutes each family member washers their hands, calculate how many gallons each family member uses and fill in the chart appropriately.

Loads of Wash: They do two loads of laundry per day and one dishwasher load every day even if the load is not completely full. Fill in the chart appropriately.

Toilet Flushing: One parent works remotely and is at home with a pre-school age child all day. Decide how many gallons each family member uses and fill in the chart appropriately.

Drinking Water: The adults have been trying to drink more water each day and are each averaging one-gallon per person with the adults drinking more than the children. Decide how many gallons each family member uses and fill in the chart appropriately.

Outdoor Watering: They currently water their yard every other day. Decide how many gallons each family member uses and fill in the chart appropriately.

After you have calculated each individual family members’ water consumption, calculate the family totals per day and per week.

b. Analyze the family’s water consumption based on the data that you have collected.

What type of chart or graph would you use to compare individual family members’ daily water usage?

Why?

(5 points)

?

Use MS Excel to create the chart or graph that was selected above. Use appropriate labeling. (Copy/paste the graph here.) (5 points)

Rank the family members in order of their daily water usage.

Who can impact the family’s water consumption the most?

(5 points)

?

What type of chart or graph would you use to compare the different types of water consumption to the total weekly usage for the top two family members?

Why?

(5 points)

?

Use MS Excel to create the chart or graph that was selected above. Use appropriate labeling. (Copy/paste the graph here.) (5 points)

Based on the graph you just created above, summarize what you can determine about the types of water usage for the top two family members.

(5 points)

?

What recommendation can you make to decrease overall water consumption?

What type of chart or graph would you use to visualize a comparison of each expense in relation to the 6-month total?

Why?

(5 points)

?

Use MS Excel to create the chart or graph that was selected above. Use appropriate labeling. (Copy/paste the graph here.) (5 points)

Summarize what you can determine about the monthly expenses based on the graph you created.

(5 pts)

?

Some of the expenses remain constant while other expenses vary each month.

What type of chart or graph would you use if you wanted to visualize the monthly trends for the expenses that change each month?

Why?

(5 points)

?

Use MS Excel to create the type chart or graph that was selected above for one of the expenses that vary: water, electricity, groceries or gas. Use appropriate labeling. (Copy/paste the graph here.) (5 points)

Based on the graph you just created above, which month had an outlier?

What is a logical reason why this month’s expenses could have been outside the normal range?

(5 points)
