Assignment 3 – Fats (20 pts total)

This week’s practical application will relate to your athlete’s fat intake, and next week the same subject will be observed for recommended hydration.

For this assignment:

Report your athlete’s height, weight, and activity level (PA)* (typical amount and type of exercise (intensity, duration and type specifying as strength/power,
endurance, recreational athlete) (4 pts).

*You will need to determine your Physical activity (PA) level and energy requirements using the ACSM/ADA position stand “Nutrition and Athletic Performance” (figure
2). The PA value should reflect recommended energy intake for type of athlete.

Based on this information, cite and show your work for all calculations a-d below/round all values to nearest whole number. Selection of grams should reflect PA and
type of athlete as well as match recommendations for nutrient range. Reference (in parentheses) all values with brief explanation supporting your selection for your
type of athlete (14 pts):

total kcals needed daily (*calculation from DRI figure 2 stated above)

fat grams recommended for your type of athlete

total grams of fats daily (fat recommended grams x kg body weight)

total kcals of fats daily (total grams x 9 kcals (of fats in each gram)

calculated % of the 100% daily intake (total fats kcals daily/total daily kcals x 100% = daily %); state and reference recommended range for your type of athlete

My athlete is a swimmer in the national team and her name is Cate Williams. She is a professional swimmer and practices competitive swimming in breaststroke,
backstroke and butterfly. Her height is 6feet and 3 inches. She is aged 33 years and weighs 172 pounds. She is a dedicated swimmer and practices daily taking evening
practice sessions and is a trainer at the national swimmers club. Constant practice has been essential in keeping fit, gaining strength and sharpening her swimming
skills (Pomroy & Adamson, 2013). Cate Williams undertakes rigorous activity to strengthen her muscles and this has been essential in her overall performance.
Throughout practice sessions, Cate practices recreate as well as competition swimming through timing as swimming stunts that they display in national festivals. Daily
practice involves 30 rounds of full swimming along the length of a standard swimming pool. This is carried in three sessions allowing for a ten minute relaxing
interval. During these intervals, she is administered with glucose and energy drinks to replenish body energy for the following sessions.
The nutritional requirements for such practice sessions involve high energy drinks and carbohydrate food such as lucozade and noodles, such drinks constitute 236
calories per can (Kang, 2012). The need to maintain high energy levels in the body is essential for muscle activity and body heat generation. The diet recommendations
need to include 8g/kg of the energy in form of starch and carbohydrates.

2b. Assuming 8g/kg body CHO
2c. with converting the wight from lbs to kg. 172lbs turns to 78 kg.
8g/kg multiplied by 78 kg = 624 g/kg
2d. multiply 624 by 4 kcals = 2496 CHO per day
2e. divide 2496 by the total daily kcal of 4500 multiplied by 100 gives you 60%

Assessment Instruction
Research Essay
Word Count: 1650 words
Due: 12.00pm Monday, 5th August 2016

Students can write their own essay question in consultation with the subject coordinator. In Week One (6th – 12th June) students will pitch an idea for their final
research essay on the discussion forum (see the ‘Forum Posts – Detailed Instructions’ document on LMS). After the 13th June, the subject coordinator will read your
post and make comments about how it might be refined and focused into a manageable research topic. They may also suggest avenues of inquiry to help you start the
research process. You should continue to converse with the subject coordinator through the forum until a final essay question has been developed.

Once you have your essay question you can start the research process. You will come across primary and secondary sources week to week and you should make a note when
you find a source that can be included in your research essay so you can locate it easily when you come to write your essay. Reading your peers’ posts on the weekly
forums and watching your group members’ presentations will be a great source of research material. Another repository of sources is the ‘More Readings’ tile on the
LMS, which includes a large number of sources divided into topics.

Presentation Guidelines:
1. Please include your essay question at the top of the page
2. Please double-space your work
3. Please include a bibliography and in text references in the La Trobe Harvard style
4. Please ensure the bibliography is listed in alphabetical order by surname
5. Use a 12 pt easy to read font (ie. Arial or Times New Roman)
6. Margins should be at least 2cm (top/bottom and left/right)
