The breach: Target’s well-publicized breach occurred during the holiday shopping season in November and December 2013. Credit and debit card information, expiration dates of cards, and card security codes were stolen. Names, mailing addresses, PHONE numbers, and e-mail addresses were taken as well. Many affected customers were reissued cards from their banks, and the company estimated the costs at more than $160 million in breach-related expenses, according to an earnings report. According to published reports, the hackers gained access through a heating and air conditioning contractor that had access to the network.
