The Message beyond the Words… This week’s lecture/discussion notes examine how symbolism and theme are used in works of fiction. Consider the stories that have been read this week. In what ways were subjects like evil, love, and tradition used as themes in some of the stories? Be sure to pay close attention to these subjects and how they are used in “The Lovers”, “The Lottery”, “Sweat”, “Desiree’s Baby” and “Young Goodman Brown”. Additionally, examine how certain objects, names, or places were used symbolically in the short stories. How do these uses of symbolism help to further support the themes in the stories? Please address these questions in a two to three page journal entry. Your journal entry must be typed in double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font with one inch margins at the top, bottom, left, and right. Be sure to number your pages and put your name, my name, the course, and the date in the top left hand corner of the page.
