Directions for Three-page Version of Your Informative Paper
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ASSIGNMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
Directions:
Write your research question at the top of the page.
Write uninterrupted for 3 twenty-minute periods (no phone, no TV, no music, no distractions).
Try to answer your question using information you remember from reading your sources, but DO NOT LOOK BACK AT THEM.
The idea is to write quickly, without worrying about organization, grammar or spelling. If you can’t think of anything to write, keep writing “I don’t know what to write” over and over again until your brain kicks in again.

Annotated Bibliography Assignment
5 Sources for Informative Paper
Objective: To prepare students to write the informative paper by summarizing their sources.
Requirements: Prepare an annotated bibliography of 5 sources for your informative paper. Remember, you are to use 2 encyclopedias, 2 journals, and 2 books (print or e-books) for the informative paper, but for this assignment, you only need to summarize 5 sources.
Procedure:
1. Find 5 sources that answer some of your questions about your topic. Remember Schwer’s law of research: you probably want to get at least 2 or 3 extra sources, in case some of the articles turn out to be less helpful than you thought.

2. Make a bibliographic citation for each source. Use the citation tools for library sources.
• Review the format for an Annotated Bibliography entry here. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/01/
• Use the MLA section in Patterns Chap 18, or Citation Machine (available from the Library Home Page under “Citing Sources” to format the author and title of each work according to what kind of a publication it is, ie book, online book, encyclopedia article, online encyclopedia article, online journal article.
• Remember to create a “Hanging Indent” (Format Menu, Paragraph, then Special=Hanging ) so that the second and subsequent lines are indented 5 spaces. The first line should be flush with the left margin.
• Make a separate page for each source.

3. Head each page in MLA format identifying yourself, instructor, class, date, etc.

4. Put the citation (author, title, publication info, web or print, etc) as the title.

5. Give a one-paragraph summary of the article. (Review Article Summary guidelines).
This summary should focus on the material in the article that is useful to your paper. For instance, if the encyclopedia article is titled, “The Skull,” but you’re researching cleft palate, only summarize the part of the article about cleft palate. Remember, a summary may include quotations that make memorable points about your topic, as well as statistics you want to remember. Be sure to put page numbers of relevant facts in ( ).

6. Follow your summary by an “I Say” paragraph. Explain what questions this source answers for you , and how you might use this information in your paper. (Each source should get only one page of summary and “I Say”.)

7. Produce a neatly-formatted entry for the other 4 sources. See sample annotation below.

“Taste and Smell: Your Sensitive Senses.” Harvard’s Men’s Health Watch. 8.9 (April, 2004): 1-3. Web. June 7, 2007.
Bad breath is caused largely by the mouth drying out, allowing bacteria to grow unchecked. Other causes for bad breath include various illnesses, eating certain foods known to be aromatic, such as onions or garlic, or acid reflux disease. While this is a widespread problem in America today, affecting at least 25 million Americans, it is hardly serious (3) and is easily cured by following a variety of home remedies. These include unblocking the saliva flow, refraining from medications like decongestants that dry the mouth, and brushing both teeth and gums, as well as flossing regularly. Tobacco products must also be avoided, and smokers should give up tobacco in all forms.
This article answers my questions about the causes and treatments of halitosis. This scientific evidence of how to fix bad breath makes the problem seem as benign and easy- to- deal- with as the common cold. Brushing one’s tongue, as well as one’s teeth, is a time-honored way to scrape away much of the odor causing material. Even though tongue brushing is a rather recent measure here in the US, this technique has been practiced for quite some time in other cultures, and it’s high time we caught up.
