1. Rome at Home? ‘Roman’ around? (I got a million of ‘em, but I won’t torture you anymore) Photo essay. You are to photograph 10 or so architectural elements* that have their origins in Classical (Roman and/or Greek), Egyptian or Medieval architecture and/or art that are in or around Ellensburg/CWU (or your hometown). You need to include a text caption that

a.) identifies the element (for example- barrel vault)

b.) identifies the building it is on- if it doesn’t have a name (XYZ Hall) or purpose (Burg Town Hall) tell me the type of building (church, house) and the street address.

c.) Explain briefly why the modern architect may have chosen to include that element-is it purely decorative? Is it on a gov’t building and so harkens back to ideas about the Roman Republic?

Please make sure you are including pictures of at least 5 different elements- I don’t want 10 pictures of arches.

2. Write a comparison of the religious structures of 2 of the following: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Meso- America, Hellenic Greece, Islamic Spain or Medieval Europe.

Describe the distinguishing features and key traits of each culture’s building. Identify the cultural idea/motivation that possibly motivated the design.

Finally, note similarities that the structures share and talk about the reasons for the shared features beyond the merely practical (practical would = they are all big to hold a lot of people). Use the book, film and lectures.
