Lucretius argues that fearing death is not rational and gives two arguments for the claim: 1) The no subject of harm argument , and 2) The symmetry argument. Try to critique these arguments.

The no subject of harm argument (3. 865-903)

1)You will die.

2)Something is bad for you only if you mind it.

3)If you don’t mind it, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for you.

4)You won’t mind being dead when you are dead.

5)It won’t be a bad thing for you then that are dead.

The symmetry argument (3. 971-977)

1)You didn’t exist for many years in the past.

2)There’s nothing fearful about that.

3)So why be bothered by the fact that you won’t exist in the future?
