Seven-Part (Paragraph) Structure for an Argumentative Essay
- Introduction
- Get Audience’s Attention: Introduce the issue (current events, statistic, anecdote)
- Address Audience: State the opposition’s position, respectfully.
- State Claim (your position) and 3-5 Subclaims (major support for your position)
- Body Paragraphs
- Background Paragraph: Describe the rhetorical situation (constraints, exigence)
- Rebuttal Paragraph: Describe opposition’s position (show respect, provide citations)
- Subclaim 1: Describe your first supporting point (provide rationale for order, citation)
- Subclaim 2: Describe second supporting point (see above)
- Subclaim 3: Describe second supporting point (see above)
- Conclusion
