Seven-Part (Paragraph) Structure for an Argumentative Essay

  1. Introduction
    1. Get Audience’s Attention: Introduce the issue (current events, statistic, anecdote)
    2. Address Audience: State the opposition’s position, respectfully.
    3. State Claim (your position) and 3-5 Subclaims (major support for your position)
  2. Body Paragraphs
    1. Background Paragraph: Describe the rhetorical situation (constraints, exigence)
    2. Rebuttal Paragraph: Describe opposition’s position (show respect, provide citations)
    3. Subclaim 1: Describe your first supporting point (provide rationale for order, citation)
    4. Subclaim 2: Describe second supporting point (see above)
    5. Subclaim 3: Describe second supporting point (see above)
  3. Conclusion

    A. Reword Claim/Subclaims: State your position (subclaims optional) B. Address Audience: State the opposition’s position
    C. Return to Attention-Getter: Re-introduce the issue
    D. Suggest possible qualification of claim or compromiseÂ
