Project 1
? Tony is a 17 year old young person living on the streets. He moved to Australia from Spain with his family five years ago. He is barely literate in English but speaks fluent Spanish. Tony left school two years ago after repeating Year 9 unsuccessfully. He has never held a steady job and has had several conflicts with the law. He is alternately charming and angry, and not sure what he wants from life.
Julie is 15, a high school student, and several months pregnant. She wants help staying in school and staying healthy.

1. What are five of the questions a case manager might ask Julie to assess her needs?
What are your living arrangements are you able to stay their once the baby is born? (If Safe housing)
How do you feel about your pregnancy?
Are your friends, partner/boyfriend and family supportive of your pregnancy?
What are your health concerns, are you eating well?
Do you need assistance with dietary needs and/or expenses?
Are you on any medications or taking vitamins?
What doctor/hospital are you seeing do you need assistance in getting to and from appointments?
What school are you attending now and would you like to continue their?
Would you like to look into other educational options/programs?

2. How might staff respond to the needs of Tony and Julie within the context of their experiences?
Tony
Firstly Tony needs to be referred to youth housing and I will need to contact an interpreter to better communicate with Tony about his personal needs. Secondly discussions with Tony to assist him to better understand Australian laws and appropriate social behaviour and there may be a need for a referral to youth justice and/or legal representation. Tony?s needs would also include connecting him with a multicultural youth programme to assist with his English skills and to reengage with family and in study and/or work. Tony may also benefit from the YEP programme also anger management programme and financial assistance and clothing.
Julie
I would talk with Julie about her options for schooling and antenatal/woman health clinics also young mother groups within her area. Julie may benefit from home visits and financial assistance also transport needs and parenting classes. Julies? school may have a young mother?s education programme that I would network with and/or network with teachers, student support officer and/or student councillor and/or Chaplain. Julie may also need assistance with day-care/ child minding, housing, furniture and clothing.
Tony and Julie
I would be welcoming and respectful to both Tony and Julie needs including cultural, mental, physical and spiritual. Listen and acknowledge them with empathy and build a trusting relationship. I would follow up on referrals and network with the appropriate colleagues and organisations to achieve the best possible outcome for Tony and Julie including her child. . Furthermore both Tony and Julies? intervention should include setting goals and giving support to think about their future and career opportunities and maintain healthy lifestyle. For Julie this includes her child.

3. Research and comment on the rights and responsibilities of Tony and Julie and other young people.

4. Research, analyse and demonstrate an understanding of youth policy in an area of youth work.

5. Explain how the historical and cultural constructs of youth and the changing context of young people might have impacted on Tony?s situation of being unemployed.

6. Give three examples of youth work practices that might be applicable for Tony.

7. Describe the legal limitations around the disclosure of information when working with young people.

8. Explain how the empowerment model might be applied when working with Julie.

9. Identify and explain one of the challenges of the youth sector.

10. Explain how social justice (a core youth work practice value) ensures supports and interventions are young person-centred.

11. Explain the legislative requirements of mandatory reporting as a policy to maximise support for young persons.

12. Explain how the Anti-discrimination Act supports the young person?s rights including access and equity of services.

13. How might Julie?s case manager match interventions and supports appropriate to Julie?s situation if Julie has strong values about the importance of gaining a secondary school education, and strong values regarding family which leads to a belief that she must keep and raise her child herself?
